Website Builder Tutorials - adding your site to Google

Lots of the stuff we’ve been writing about on this blog has been about how to improve your website’s position in the search engine results page. We’ve tried to make it as easy to follow as possible. But not everyone is at the same level, so if there’s one thing that you must do when setting up a website, it is to add your website to Google. Here’s how:

  1. Thanks for that - nice and straightforward :-)

If you have several domain names attached to the same website, do you need to submit every one individually like this, or is there some way to tell Google - all these domains are for the same website?

…and at what point will Google get unhappy with the number of domains pointing at the same site?

  2. Hi Alison,

When you say ‘attached to the same website’, are you forwarding or pointing them towards it?

You need to do this for every domain name, but I’d concentrate on just 1 domain for your SEO efforts. Google is wary of duplicate content, which if you have the different domain names pointing to one website, it may be considered as.

  6. Hi, I have a few problems.
The first one is that I cannot verify my site on Google. I don’t see proper HTML text for my pages. Properties show just “English language” and nothing else. Google tells me to put the code at the beginning of HTML text. Am I supposed to right it myself?..
How do I paste the Google code to verify the site onto my webpage?
    Sorry for being a pain…
    Kind regards,
    Irene/

  7. One more question. Can I have a few pages in Russian?

    Comment by Irene — July 15, 2009 @ 3:16 pm

  8. Hi Irene,

First off: Yes, you can have a few Russian pages. As long as you able to write it ! Do you have a Cyrillic keyboard?

Second, in order to verify your site, log into your control panel and choose Admin, then Site information.

In there you will find ’sign up for Google Webmaster tools’. Sign up to webmaster tools, add your site, and Google will give you some code to ‘verify your site’.

Paste this code into the place on your WebEden control panel which appeared after you clicked ‘Sign up for Google Webmaster tools’.

You’re not a pain! Lets us know how you got on.

  9. Hi, Ken,
thank you for your quick reply. Yes, we have Cyrillic fonts.
We are still having a problem. We’ve got the Google code, but not sure where to put it in.

“Paste this code into the place on your WebEden control panel which appeared after you clicked ‘Sign up for Google Webmaster tools’.”
Where is our WebEden control panel?
    Kind regards,
    Irene.

  10. The WebEden contol panel is the panel that you use when you’re editing your website.

It has a menu across the top which reads:

    Files | Upload | Edit | Pages | Insert | Design | People | Help

To get to Google Webmaster Tools, click:

    ‘Edit’

    then

    ‘Manage your site’

    then

    ‘admin’

    then

    ’site information’.

Good luck, let us know if you have any other issues.

  11. Hi, it is me again, trouble.
I did it, Ken. The problem I seem to have is uploading the Google code onto my website.
Google sais to insert it right after . But where is the HTML text? When I open HTML view in WebEden control panel, I see just scattered images of my page - there is no HTML text where I could insert the code. And the Firefox Source page cannot be edited - just copied.
    Where did I go wrong?..
    Can it be file names?..
Sorry… this is my first site.
    Kind regards,
    Irene.

  12. Me again. I think I did everything correctly like you said, Ken.
It is HTML that confuses me…
The code that Google gives is called Google Web Master ID, right?

    Comment by Irene — July 16, 2009 @ 2:16 pm

  13. Hi Irene,

Yes, that’s right. The code that Google gives is called Google Web Master ID

You can’t upload the Google code into your HTML. We don’t let you do that! You need to paste it into the space on the control panel described above.

I just realised that we’ve done a blog post about this before:
    http://www.webeden.co.uk/blog/website-builder-tips/how-to-use-google-verify/

Make sure you followed the instructions there.

And let me know how you got on!

    Ken

Hopefully this blog post here should help you out

  14. Hi, Ken. I read the blog and followed the instructions. Still not verified.
Can it be because of difference in addresses?
I paid for the URL: http://www.varnapropertymanagement.co.uk
But on the top of my page is: http://www.varnapropertymanagement.webeden.co.uk.
Which of them is my proper address?

    Comment by Irene — July 16, 2009 @ 3:24 pm

  15. Me again. Sorry, the URL was free. But can I change the shorter address for the longer one now or is it too late? For I think, that may be the reason. I followed the instructions correctly, yet Google keeps asking me if I added the code to the URL…

    Comment by Irene — July 16, 2009 @ 3:35 pm

  16. Hi Irene,

If you have bought a domain (http://www.varnapropertymanagement.co.uk) in the same account that you have built a website, that domain will automatically be assigned to that website. So http://www.varnapropertymanagement.co.uk should replace http://www.varnapropertymanagement.webeden.co.uk.

To check this, log into your account here:
    http://www.webeden.co.uk/account.htm

and then click onto the domains tab:
    http://www.webeden.co.uk/domain-names.htm

Here you will see the domain that you own. You can manually assign it to your website.

Google verify should be almost instant. I’d recommend verifying this address:
    http://www.varnapropertymanagement.co.uk

    Can you have another go?

    Ken

  17. Done it! Verified!
Thank you for your help, Ken!

  18. Ken, hope, you are not tired of me yet?
One more question - and I leave you in peace. For a while.
Can I make the second site - all in Russian?

    Comment by Irene — July 16, 2009 @ 4:18 pm

  19. No problem - glad it all worked!

Not tired at all, just pleased that you solved your problems.

An all Russian site? The only problem is that you can’t change the Menu names - they’re stuck in English…

  22. Hello guys, I followed your instructions some time ago in hope that my webpage would appear on google. I wasn’t sure if the process was meant to take months, but am still not on there. Would you happen to know if I did it incorrectly?

  23. Hi Emma,

What was Site Address (URL) of the website you submitted to Google?

I just found http://www.myinternethorsecouk.webeden.co.uk on Google, is that what you submitted?

    Thanks,
    Ken

  24. Could you please check that I have set this site up properly as I am not able to see it on google. I purchased another domain (celestialcolours.co.uk) and my A record has been pointed correctly. I have verified the site on google, and I think applied the meta tag, so am confused as to if I have done something wrong.

    Thank you

  25. Hi Amanda,

When you added your website to Google, what website address (URL) did you use?

And when did you add it?

    Thanks,
    Ken

    Comment by admin — October 13, 2009 @ 10:29 am

  26. I added it yesterday - http:/www.celestialcolours.co.uk.

I know it may be a bit early to see it, but am worried I haven’t done it properly, does it look OK?!

    Comment by Amanda — October 13, 2009 @ 10:47 am

  27. Hi Amanda,

It can take up to 3 months for Google to recrawl your website - but a good bet is to have another look in a couple of weeks to see if it has changed.

    Thanks,
    Ken

  30. If i wish to delete the website/domain name at any time, how easy is that?

    Thanks.

    Comment by Michael — November 17, 2009 @ 1:38 pm

  31. Hi Michael,

You can delete your website at any time.

Click ‘edit my site’ to ensure you’re in edit mode. In the Toolbar select ‘Admin’–>’Delete site’.

Beware: Deleting a site is permanent. It does not cancel your subscription.

Its not possible to delete a domain name. Once your domain name passes out of the registration period, it goes back into the registrar’s ‘pot’ of available domain names.

    Hope that answers your questions!
