Using iGoogle to get the latest from the Website Builder blog

We hope that you’re all enjoying reading the website builder blog – we certainly appreciate the feedback we’re getting.

I just wanted to make sure you knew about a handy way to keep up with the latest entries. On the left hand side of the blog there’s an image with the word ‘subscribe’ in it that looks like this:

Basically, this is a link to an RSS feed of the blog. (RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication). RSS is a system that allows content (words, pictures) from one website to appear elsewhere – on another website, on an email, or in an RSS reader. The RSS feed button on this blog allows you to have the latest entries to the blog appear somewhere else. This could be an iGoogle page, or an RSS reader such as Google Reader or Feedreader.

If you haven’t heard of iGoogle, then I really recommend checking it out. It has really changed the way I (and millions of others) get information from the web. To try it out you will need a Google account (don’t worry its free). To get one, go to the main Google home page and click ‘sign in’ on the top right hand corner. On the next page click ‘create an account now’ on the right hand side. Follow the process and sign up for an account.

Once you’ve got an account page, you’ll see loads of products that Google produce – its quite a few, they’re more than just a search company! Within the products section, on the left hand side and 3rd down is ‘iGoogle’. Click on it. This allows you to set up a completely customised version of the Google homepage. You can choose a design theme, but more importantly you can ‘add stuff’ to your homepage. What stuff? Well there are all kinds of cool gadgets and widgets, such as stickies, weather info, bookmarks - have a look and you will see what I mean. The other thing that you can do is to add RSS feeds from other websites.

In order to get the Webeden Website builder blog onto your iGoogle page, sign up for an iGoogle page, and then come back to the Webeden blog and click on the image above. You will then see a range of web –based feed readers – all you need to do is click ‘add to Google’. This will automatically add this blog to your iGoogle page.

Good luck – let us know how you get on – and if you have any comments please leave them below!
